This week we have collected reflections from some of the best developers and writers we know and love. Their reflections on success, how to pursue it and how to make it a part of your life are inspiring and practical.
Enjoy!
In “3 Traits the Most Successful Software Engineers Possess” Kevin Naughton Jr. (over at The Software Engineer Weekly) provides some helpful perspective on three traits that successful engineers possess. We like it because it measures success in effort: “I am successful when I do these things”, rather than results: “I am successful when I achieve these outcomes.” Having process dependent goals is always a more empowering position to be in.
In “My 25-Year Engineering Career Retrospective” by Nicola Ballotta (aka the Hybrid Hacker) we get a fascinating look back over his 25 year career and what lessons he learned along the way. It’s JAM packed with tips across various parts of what makes a truly successful career. We love how he shows success as a result of pursuing excellence in multiple aspects of life.
Finally, we are obsessed with Wes Kao’s article “Are your standards too low? In defense of raising the bar” If you are striving for success in your career it’s often in raising the bar for yourself and your team, and pushing past limiting beliefs (Wes addresses multiple limiting beliefs and excuses in the article) that you find the energy and inspiration that might be lacking.
This is our favorite quote from the article:
Raising the bar isn’t necessarily more work. It’s often about improving your intuition, decision-making accuracy, exposure to what’s possible, and taste level, so you’re making better judgment calls.
We are cheering you along the journey to success in your life and career!!
Be ambitious at work and at home
Great article! I specially loved the emphasis on setting high standards and process-dependent goals. Thanks for sharing!
